But despite this clear understanding of the universe’s structured order, a question arises: If Allah is in control of everything, why should we work to earn our livelihood? Many Muslims ask this question, thinking that if Allah has created everything, then there is no need for effort on our part. However, such thinking overlooks a critical understanding of Allah’s creation and the laws He has set in place.
Finding Allah in His Creation
We come to know Allah through His creation. The universe, with all its complexity and order, points to a Creator who designed everything in a logical, scientific, and purposeful way. The Quran reminds us:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran, 3:190)
It’s not just a belief but a rational understanding that there is a power greater than ourselves that governs everything. The perfect order of the world is the most appropriate evidence that such a superpower exists. Allah has created a world that follows rules, not chaos. This means there is a plan, and it’s logical that we must abide by those laws.
We believe that Allah has created a universe that is not random, where everything follows a cause and effect. So, why do we sometimes forget that if Allah is in control, we should still work for our food? The very laws that govern the universe—those which led us to believe in Allah—are the same laws that require us to work for our livelihood.

The Role of Human Effort in Earning Livelihood
Despite the fact that Allah is the ultimate provider, many people still ask, "If Allah controls everything, why do I need to work to earn a livelihood?" The answer lies in the very nature of how Allah created the world: it follows a logical, scientific method. The laws of nature that Allah has established govern our lives, and as part of His creation, we are expected to work within those laws.
Think about it: food doesn’t appear in your mouth, nor does your home fill with provision without any effort on your part. Allah has designed a world where effort is necessary to achieve goals. It’s through our work and striving that Allah facilitates the means of sustenance. As the Quran says:
“And He it is Who gives life and death, and when He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” (Quran, 40:68)
While Allah controls all, the rules that He has made for the universe are what guide us. And those rules are clear: to earn your livelihood, you must work for it. It’s a simple law of cause and effect. Without effort, there is no outcome.
The Rarity of Divine Intervention
That said, there are times when Allah, in His wisdom, may intervene in extraordinary ways. There are miracles, instances when divine will overrides the natural laws. However, such occurrences are rare. Generally, the rule is that Allah’s creation follows consistent, logical laws that we must work within.
For example, in the case of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) when he was thrown into the fire, it was Allah’s will that he remained unharmed. But such miracles are exceptions and not the norm. Most of the time, the natural order Allah has established prevails.
Work, Effort, and Halal Means
Islam is clear that seeking livelihood is not just a matter of necessity but an act of worship. It is through lawful (halal) means that we earn our livelihood, and the pursuit of that livelihood is not only encouraged but rewarded. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.” (Sahih Muslim)
Our efforts are a reflection of our trust in Allah’s plan, and working hard to earn a halal livelihood is a way of expressing our faith. The Quran says:
“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is indeed Him that you worship.” (Quran, 2:172)
We are reminded that the provisions Allah gives us are not to be taken for granted, and working for them in a lawful manner is a way of showing gratitude.
Conclusion: The Balance Between Effort and Divine Will
In conclusion, while it is true that Allah is the creator and sustainer of all things, He has designed a world governed by logical laws. These laws require human effort to achieve livelihood, and this effort is part of the plan Allah has set for us. It is not enough to rely solely on the belief that Allah provides; we must actively work to earn our provisions.
Allah has given us both the means and the ability to strive within His framework. We must pray for ease, seek halal ways of earning, and trust that Allah’s plan is always at work, even as we do our part. So, work hard, stay honest, and rely on Allah’s wisdom and mercy to guide you.
